I am happy to provide writing samples, resumes, CVs or any other information. Please contact me if you are interested in seeing more of my work. Below are some of my accomplishments.
Kansas City Star’s 913 Johnson County News Magazine at Joco913.com
The Kansas City Star hired me on to write a profile piece on the Spring Hill School district. I logged more than 340 miles, 30 interviews, 12 hours of transcribing, 23 emails and 6 weeks of work to pull this one off. It is nearly a 3,000 word story, and I’m proud to be completed.
The story is a part of a series profiling all the Johnson County School districts.
Wichita Eagle at Kansas.com
The Senate Committee on Education held a hearing on March 8 that was filled with concerned parents and advocates for disability rights.
This story covered a vote where the House passed a bill granted protection to schoolchildren regarding the schools’ use of seclusion and restraint. The story had some comments that proved the issue was of interest to the public, and that my insight was helpful.
“State accelerating road repair, reconstruction projects” on Jan.27, 2012 on Wichita Eagle’s Kansas.com.
The story covered a press conference that updated legislators on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s plan to accelerate repair projects in Kansas by allocating $50 million to projects.
The Senate Committee on Education voted to pass SB 450 to fund education. This bill will request $112 million, and half of the money will be put into an equalized fund. The hearing was particularly interesting because the bill was not passed without heated debate. Sen. Tim Owens of Johnson County wants to the right to raise property taxes. According to a reporter, Johnson County funds more than 18 percent of the state’s property tax. Also, the Oak Park Mall, located at 95th Street and Quivira Road, funds more of Kansas’ sales tax revenue than 60 Kansas counties could ever fund. No wonder Sen. Owens wants to the right to raise taxes. Think about it: there are more houses in Johnson County AND more of these homes are expensive. It’s believed there are more million dollar homes in Johnson County than in 90 percent of the state.
I blogged for USA Today College. USA Today College asked me to join their college blog in 2010. Since then, they ask for pitches sporadically throughout the hire. My USA Today bio is on the USA TODAY Writers Page.
My most recent story is “Tips to help first-generation college students to beat the odds… and graduate.” This story had over 100 tweets and retweets. These tweets included more than one dozen federal TRIO programs at universities across the country. There were more than 250 Facebook likes within the first 48 hours of the story being posted.
Since then the story has been mentioned on the University of Kansas’ William Allen White School of Journalism website: http://www.jayhawkjournalism.org/. The story with its link was mentioned on the front page of the Council For Opportunity in Education webpage.
